Welcome to Ixonia, Wisconsin

Ixonia is a town in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. The population was 2,902 at the 2000 census.

Ixonia was established as a town in 1846. Its earliest European settlers were of English, Welsh, Irish, Norwegian, and German descent. There is a tradition that when it was decided to divide the town of Union, Wisconsin, into 2 townships there was quick agreement over one of them, Concord. But there was a great divergence of opinions as to what to call the other, then referred to in official documents simply as Town 8. To satisfy all factions, it was agreed to put the letters of the alphabet on slips of paper and have young Mary Piper draw them until a word was formed that could be used as the town name. The result was Ixonia. Not surprisingly, Ixonia, Wisconsin is the only town of that name in the United States

The town of Ixonia, situated along Hwy 16 between Watertown and Oconomowoc, is full of surprises for the passerby who stops to take notice of the village of garden greenhouses, an educational petting farm, a happening pub and lively Sunday dances that hearken back to another time.
