Welcome to Jefferson, Wisconsin
Jefferson is a town in Jefferson County, Wisconsin, at the fork of the Crawfish and Rock rivers. The population was 7,000 at the 2000 census. The City of Jefferson is located partially within the town.
The City of Jefferson combines the ease of urban living with the beauty and freshness of a rural environment. Complementing the alliance is the convenient proximity to Wisconsin's two largest metropolitan areas: The county seat of Jefferson County, Jefferson is 35 miles west of Milwaukee and 25 miles east of Madison. The City of Jefferson is a quick 4 miles south of Interstate Highway 94 linking those 2 cities. Driving distance to I-90, leading directly to Chicago, is less than 25 miles.
Jefferson educators are justifiably proud of its outstanding school system. While meeting high academic standards, both public and parochial education is geared to the total needs of the child. Sports and other extracurricular activities, for both boys and girls, are included as an essential part of their complete educational program. Jefferson is also home for the well known St. Coletta School, where the sisters of St. Francis of Assisi give specialized care and education to the children and young adults with learning disabilities from across the United States and Canada. The Fort Atkinson branch of Madison Area Technical College and the University of Wisconsin campuses in Madison and Whitewater are all conveniently located within easy driving distance.
Golf courses and golf course lots abound throughout the area. Known for its gently rolling green hills, southern Wisconsin is a delightful spot for residents to plan - or hold - their golf getaways. Of course, golf is just one of the many outdoor and sporting options available to residents of Jefferson and Jefferson County; water sports of all kinds, tennis, biking and hiking, youth athletics, rock climbing and spelunking can easily fill your three-season schedule, while in fall and winter, the changing leaves and seasonal landscapes offer wonderful times for skiing, snowmobiling, skating and more.
Nearby Milwaukee is known internationally as the City of Festivals. Following suit, Jefferson's own Gemuetlichkeit Days (pronounced ge-meekt'-lee-kite) was started in 1971 to celebrate the German heritage of many of the residents of the Jefferson area. The term connotes a coziness and the notion of belonging, social acceptance, cheerfulness, the absence of anything hectic and the spending of quality time. The festival was first held under tents in the downtown area. In 1975 the festival was moved to the Jefferson County Fair grounds and has been held there every year since then.
